2023 National Policy Platform

As landowners and land managers, we recognize that well-managed working lands are the cornerstones of both human communities and the ecosystems on which we all depend. We know what it takes to own and manage land, produce food and fiber, and to steward wildlife and natural resources on a daily basis.

The Western Landowners Alliance was created to ensure that public policies are informed by people with this first-hand knowledge of land stewardship and who share a commitment to conserving our natural heritage for future generations. We advance policies and practices that sustain working lands, connected landscapes, and native species.

Our 2023 policy platform identifies recommendations and lays out priorities for federal and state policies that affect our constituents and everyone who relies on the natural resources of the West.

Rock Weirs

Rock weirs are structures that act to slow water down in streams or ditches, decreasing erosion and creating habitat. Weirs offer low-tech solutions to issues that can plague landowners as they manage water crossing their land, and can be a powerful management tool. The strategic addition of rocks to streambeds creates turbulence and drag, which slows water down, reducing its capacity to carry sediment and erode the land. Weirs have been used as a water management tool for thousands of years, but the early 1900s saw a rise in their use for habitat and stream restoration.
