We're in the middle of the largest land transfer in American history.
Throughout the West, a growing community of landowners is working to determine how the lands they steward will be cared for in the future.
The succession planning process can be challenging and isolating, often with a small (or nonexistent) peer group to turn to for advice.
That’s why Western Landowners Alliance partnered with TomKat Ranch to create ‘Land as a Lever for Good’, a 3-day retreat on the coast of California that brings together next generation landowners from across the West.
Land as a Lever for Good
Exploring stewardship, legacy and the role of land in a changing West.
September 11-13, 2026
TomKat Ranch, Pescadero, California
The weekend brings a small group of next generation landowners together to explore the role these lands can play in their lives, their family's future, and the vitality of rural communities in the West.
Through guided conversations, inspiring voices, and small-group discussions, attendees are encouraged to envision how the lands you may inherit can be a powerful force for good.
Hosted at the beautiful TomKat Ranch near the coast of central California, this will be a memorable weekend of learning and camaraderie. We hope you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of your own personal values and vision for your land, a supportive peer network of NextGen landowners, and an appetite for continuing the conversation!
There is no fee to attend this event, and food & lodging is included. Participants are responsible for travel to and from the ranch.

Participant Testimonials
“As a next generation landowner, Land as a Lever for Good gave me a community of people who understand both the challenges and the hope tied to caring for working landscapes. The retreat helped me grow, connect, and feel supported in work that can often feel isolating.” – Jackson Stewart, B Bar Ranch, Montana
“I really enjoyed hearing about other participants operations. It was reassuring to learn that other families run into some similar things. I wasn’t really aware people experience the same issues around family dynamics. It’s nice knowing they’re common and also nice having a network to now discuss this with.” – 2025 participant
