Public Lands Grazing Reform: What’s Changing and Why It Matters for the West

June 24 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MDT

BLM Grazing Webinar

Major reforms are taking shape at the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture. From a new memorandum of understanding between the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) aimed at improving coordination of grazing management, to proposed reforms to BLM grazing regulations, a lot is happening that could have significant implications for ranchers, land managers and the future of public lands.

Grazing is an important tool for managing forests and rangelands, supporting rural economies, reducing wildfire risk, while also producing food and fiber. At the same time, public lands grazing has long been the subject of debate. Historical overgrazing and poor management have impacted swathes of public lands. At the same time, rigid grazing regulations have limited the ability of land managers to respond to variable conditions like drought, wildfire, and shifting forage availability. Our understanding of rangeland management has evolved significantly over the years, and so too should our policies, which have lagged behind advances in grazing science to benefit landscape health.

Join us for an engaging conversation with Brenda Younkin, BLM Deputy Assistant Secretary, and Gilbert Jackson, USFS Rangeland Management Program Manager, to talk about these policy developments, the goals behind them, and what they may mean for grazing on public lands. Whether you are a member of the public, rancher, land manager, or simply interested in the future of public lands, this webinar will provide an opportunity to learn more and ask questions directly of agency leadership. Register today to join the discussion.
