PAYING FOR

Paying for

Too often landowners shoulder the costs of providing public goods like wildlife habitat, clean water and healthy soils with little to no financial support.
We're changing that.

What Is Conservation Finance?

Conservation finance refers to tools, programs, and payments that help landowners protect and care for natural resources—while keeping their operations running.
This can include:
  • Payments for keeping land in wildlife habitat
  • Funding for drought-resilient grazing systems
  • Income from restoring wetlands or improving water flows
  • Credit for storing carbon in your soil or trees
Some programs are government-run. Others come from water utilities, nonprofits, or private companies. But they all aim to reward landowners for managing their land in ways that benefit the broader public.

Helping land stewards get paid for the care they provide

Those who steward the land—farmers, ranchers, and forest owners—should be recognized and rewarded for the ecosystem services they provide. Clean water, abundant wildlife, healthy soils, carbon storage, and open space all have real value.

But caring for these resources takes time, effort, and money. We believe landowners shouldn’t have to carry that burden alone.

WLA helps make sure conservation finance programs:
  • Are voluntary and flexible
  • Respect landowner rights and privacy
  • Offer fair payments for real stewardship
  • Fit the unique needs of Western landscapes

Navigating Ecosystem Service Markets

WLA works directly with landowners to help them navigate these markets and conservation finance tools. Whether it’s enrolling in a habitat lease program, accessing watershed service payments, or evaluating emerging carbon opportunities, we help you make informed decisions that fit your operation and values.

Shaping Markets that Work for the West

Markets must be built to reflect the realities of working lands in the West: variable climates, diverse ownership, and complex regulatory environments. WLA plays a key role in shaping policies and public-private partnerships that make conservation finance work for Western landowners.

We advocate for programs that:
  • Respect property rights
  • Offer flexible, voluntary participation
  • Deliver clear and fair compensation
  • Invest in long-term stewardship
We’ve led efforts to expand state habitat lease programs, influence Farm Bill conservation funding, and support community-driven watershed agreements.

Support policies and markets that reward stewardship.

The Vital Lands Partnership: the next step for western conservation finance

Across the West, thousands of families are making the daily decisions that shape the fate of migratory corridors, aquifers, carbon stores, and more than 80% of the region’s threatened and endangered species.

Yet because most ecosystem service markets and conservation funding mechanisms were built for forests or croplands—not for rangeland—these stewards have historically been shut out of investments meant to reward ecological care.

That gap is where the Vital Lands Partnership comes in.
