WLA seeks nominees for new “Land & Livelihood” Award
Submission Deadline Aug. 13
The Award
The Land and Livelihoods Award will be given annually to a person identified by WLA members to have made exceptional contributions as a citizen in sustaining working lands, connected landscapes, and native species. The recipient will be selected based on his/her vision for the West and critical role in helping to create, as Wallace Stegner once described, “a society to match its scenery.”
One cannot be pessimistic about the West. This is the native home of hope. When it fully learns that cooperation, not rugged individualism, is the quality that most characterizes and preserves it, then it will have achieved itself and outlived its origins. Then it has a chance to create a society to match its scenery. — Wallace Stegner
As a special honor in 2018, made possible by generous support from National Geographic Society, the recipient of this year’s Land and Livelihoods will also be asked to designate a place-based collaborative effort to be given a monetary award of general support toward its work. Both the recipient and a representative(s) of the designated collaborative effort will be honored together at the WLA Land and Livelihoods conference, this September in Billings, Montana.
The Selection Process
The Land and Livelihoods Award recipient may be presented to an owner or manager of working lands. Alternatively, it could also be given to an exemplary partner in working lands stewardship identified from within a government agency, an NGO or the private sector. If the collaborative designated to receive the monetary gift does not have 501(c)(3) status, an appropriate fiscal sponsor will be identified.
WLA members, staff and board are asked to propose a range of candidates for this award. Nominees need not be WLA members. A Selection Committee comprised of WLA board members will take all nominees into consideration and make the final selection.
