Women in Ranching Guides

April Martin Chalfant

Wild Rose Center, Northern Cheyenne Reservation

April is the daughter of a Montana rodeo and ranching legacy family, an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and a landowner and rancher on ancestral lands. Raised on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, her passions are livestock, ranch life, agriculture and healing landscapes. After marrying her husband, they settled on the place that she grew up on. They raised two daughters and countless other “bonus children” on the land that her ancestors had fought so hard to keep. As the executive director of The Wild Rose Center, April uses her traditional homelands to heal men and women from all walks of life through holistic medicine, land- based therapy, and agriculture. For land that was deemed “unfarmable” and “unlivable” not many years ago, it has proven that places can heal and memories are built to last. Believing in the Cheyenne philosophy that “we are all related” she hopes to share her story and hear yours to build a kinder world.
