The West-Wide Communications Associate will create and share relevant information, stewardship practices, and education on ecologically and economically beneficial strategies for the stewardship of grazing lands through various channels and mediums, primarily creative digital media (i.e. online articles, videos/reels, podcast/audio, social posts). Strong writing skills and a passion for talking to people and helping their expertise and experience shine are musts. The position will work closely with our Working Lands program director and the working lands team while reporting to the communications director to deliver on objectives within our Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) coordination project.

About Western Landowners Alliance (WLA): Founded in 2012 by landowners and managers, the organization aims to increase the wellbeing of working lands in the American West and the living communities, including human and wildlife, that depend on them.

Position Overview: The West-Wide Communications Associate will create and share relevant information, stewardship practices, and education on ecologically and economically beneficial strategies for the stewardship of grazing lands through various channels and mediums, primarily creative digital media (i.e. online articles, videos/reels, podcast/audio, social posts). Strong writing skills and a passion for talking to people and helping their expertise and experience shine are musts. The position will work closely with our Working Lands program director and the working lands team while reporting to the communications director to deliver on objectives within our Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) coordination project.

Amount of Time & Status: 20 hours a week, exempt, Monday-Friday. Potential for increase in hours as the organization grows.

Location: This position is remote with preference of residency in the American West. Periodic travel will be required.

Reports to: Communications Director

Compensation: $30.00/hour. Salary is commensurate with experience. Duties/Responsibilities Include:

  • Create, compile and distribute outreach and communications content, including magazine/blog writing, audio, video and images/illustrations, on grazing lands ecology and stewardship in support of state and regional partnerships advancing GLCI priorities.
  • Implement daily marketing and communications operations for WLA’s Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative coordination projects according to communications and marketing plan
  • Work closely with partner state grazing land conservation coalitions and WLA’s communications team to coordinate communications efforts, messaging and content production across the West.
  • Work with outside vendors to generate digital and print marketing materials.
  • Create compelling marketing email and social media content for WLA brand channels to engage constituents and convey impact.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years experience in communications, marketing or related field
  • Knowledge and/or experience with agriculture, grazing, livestock, grassland or rangeland issues
  • Experience designing and implementing email and online marketing or social media campaigns
  • Excellent communications, writing, editing, and graphic design skills.
  • Adequate knowledge of data collection methods (polls, focus groups, surveys etc.)
  • Demonstrated understanding/experience with modern digital marketing and communications techniques and tools
  • Quick study and enthusiastic teammate
  • Technology-adept and flexible
  • Passionate about the landscapes of the West and the role of private land stewardship in keeping them whole and healthy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse array of stakeholders
  • Able to set and meet strategic long and short-term goals and objectives
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite, and cloud file-sharing systems

Working Environment/Physical Activities: Work environment is an office setting and outdoors. Physical activities include sitting at a desk and working on a keyboard and computer several hours a day; conducting business over the telephone and via email; standing for long periods of time; traveling long distances by vehicle (including traveling on unpaved roads), and operating recording/photography equipment in rugged/remote ranch and rangeland settings in various weather conditions. This position may also require moving organization materials weighing up to 25 pounds. This position also requires facilitation of meetings and interfacing professionally with the public.
