Title: Natural Resource Technician
General overview: The Conservation Department of Philmont Scout Ranch is seeking to hire six Natural Resource Technicians for field work in Summer of 2025, positions are based in Cimarron, New Mexico. These seasonal positions report to the Natural Resource Coordinator who serves in a seasonal leadership role under the Natural Resource Manager for the ranch. Pay schedule for seasonals on the ranch is monthly and dependent on experience, room and board covered for the season. Technicians will gain valuable work experience related to natural resource/land management and recreation on private and federal lands in a professional setting.
Specific Responsibilities:
Noxious weed treatments and monitoring.
Wildlife/Livestock water development.
Participant Outreach.
Fuel moisture monitoring/Fuels treatment.
Prescribed fire site prep.
Reclamation work.
Stream Restoration
Data entry.
Habitat management projects.
Rangeland monitoring/improvement.
Administrative paperwork.
Facilities and equipment management.
Other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate has experience working on projects within the scope of the above-mentioned areas and requires a basic working knowledge of natural resource/land management practices, maintenance/repair/use of natural resource equipment (backpack sprayers, hand tools, UTV, seeder, 4×4 vehicles, etc..). This position is also responsible for frequent interactions with participants on the ranch to inform them of proper wildlife procedures/policies and resolve routine wildlife issues among areas on the ranch. Candidate must be willing to obtain NM applicator license prior to starting work on the ranch.
Work plans may require multiple overnight stays in the backcountry and will involve use of, but not limited to, herbicide application equipment, hand tools, heavy lifting, hiking with weight, use of 4×4 vehicles (truck and utv/atv), agriculture/heavy equipment. Staff will be subject to periodic adverse working conditions such as hot/cold temperatures, adverse weather conditions, insects, mud, direct contact wildlife, etc.
Typical employment dates run from May 1st to August 7th. Potential for contracts to be extended into Fall/Winter work for limited positions.
