DESCRIPTION:Members of the community are invited to spend a half day visiting the TE Ranch to learn about the ranch’s stewardship\, management\, wildlife habitats and history. Participants will see the ranch firsthand\, hear its story\, and ask questions about daily operations. \nWhat you’ll see: \n\nBuffalo Bill’s original homestead cabin\nWildlife habitat and migration corridors\nDaily cattle ranch operations\nStewardship practices and conservation\n\nFounded by William F. Cody in the late 1800s\, the TE remains a working cattle ranch rooted in the Cody community. The ranch plays an important role in the region’s economy and heritage\, providing local employment\, beef production\, and critical winter range for big game. \nRegistration required here. \n

This field tour will highlight the ranch’s use of virtual fencing to manage post-fire recovery\, a water conservation project\, and forest management and selective timber harvesting\, while also sharing the economic realities and opportunities of modern ranch stewardship. \nParticipants will hear firsthand from the Smiths about the conservation practices they’ve implemented with partners including WLA and NRCS\, and learn how technology and collaborative stewardship are helping build more resilient ranches and landscapes. SUMMARY:2026 Fall Adaptive Grazing Workshop by the Southwest Montana Sagebrush Partnership
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE for the Fall Adaptive Grazing Workshop facilitated by the Southwest Montana Sagebrush Partnership.\n\nThe workshop will be held on October 14 & 15 in Dillon\, MT (field trip west of Twin Bridges\, MT).\n\nOctober 14 will be held at the University of Montana Western’s Lewis and Clark Room and will feature a line-up of great presenters including Dr. Clayton Marlow – Flexible Riparian Grazing Management\, Cooper Hibbard of Sieben Ranch – sharing his unique story into Adaptive Livestock Grazing\, a Rancher round table discussion including several of the ranchers piloting new tools and ideas in the Flexible Grazing Project and two additional impactful speakers that we are currently in communication with.  The venue for the presentations on October 14 will be the University of Montana-Western Lewis and Clark Room.\n\nOctober 15 will include a field trip to a BLM allotment west of Twin Bridges\, MT to show the change over time and discuss public land grazing and flexibility.  Speakers will include Dr. Jeff Mosley\, MSU\, Jaime Wood\, manager of Hamilton Ranch\, Dusty Crowe and Kelly Savage\, Assistant Field Manager and Rangeland Management Specialist for the BLM’s Dillon Field office.  Lunch will be provided both days.

Over the course of the workshop\, you’ll progress from saw basics to practical field work that connects technical skill with stewardship and fire resilience. \nDay 1 focuses on safety\, equipment setup\, and foundational cutting techniques. Day 2 builds toward real-world application—pile burning\, brush clearing\, felling\, and shaded-fuel-break projects on the ranch. \nParticipants will: \n\n\nUnderstand chainsaw function\, operation\, and safety protocols \n\n\nPractice cutting\, limbing\, and log-handling techniques \n\n\nLearn sharpening\, bar-oil\, fuel-mix\, and general maintenance routines \n\n\nGain an introduction to tree felling and on-site hazard assessment \n\n\nApply fuel-management principles: pile burning\, defensible-space layout\, and shaded-fuel-break design \n\n\nBuild lasting confidence through hands-on practice in real outdoor conditions \n\n\nWho This Is For \nThis workshop is open to women and gender-marginalized individuals of all experience levels—no prior chainsaw background required.
