SUMMARY:North Fork California Meat Summit
DESCRIPTION:The North Fork California Meat Summit\, which UC Cooperative Extension\, Siskiyou County is co-hosting with the Siskiyou Economic Development Council. The Summit will bring together all sectors of the regional meat supply chain—including ranchers\, processors\, distributors\, and buyers—to share knowledge and build connections.\n\n\nThe North Fork Summit is part of a multi-state effort that began in North Carolina several years ago and is supported by the National Meat Summits Steering Committee. These educational summits encourage networking and collaboration along the meat supply chain\, thus supporting new market opportunities\, fostering innovation\, and enhancing understanding about the realities of bringing meat from farm to fork. This will be the first time a Summit has been hosted in California\, and we’re excited to bring the concept to our region in a smaller-scale format and with a particular focus on ranchers and the realities of doing business here.\n\n\nWe aimed to develop an agenda that would appeal to a broad range of ranchers\, regardless of their level of experience or the direct sales model they are interested in. Program highlights:\n– Ranch and processing facility tours\n– Business planning session co-led by Dan Macon\, UCCE Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor\, and Dr. Kasey DeAtley\, Professor of Animal & Range Sciences\, CSU Chico College of Ag\n– Tradeshow featuring local DTC ranchers and resources for the ranching community\n– Networking cocktail hour\n– On-ranch dinner featuring Siskiyou producers\n– Panel discussion exploring rancher-led co-ops: featuring Cody Hopkins\, Grass Roots Farmers’ Cooperative\, and Morgan Doran\, Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor\n\n\nRegistration is $150 and includes tours\, transportation\, educational sessions\, networking opportunities and meals. Thanks to the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program and the California Cattle Council\, 20 sponsored registrations are available for qualifying ranchers (see registration page for details)! Dinner-only tickets\, which include access to the tradeshow\, networking hour\, and panel discussion\, are also available.

DESCRIPTION:2026 Fall Sustainable Ranching Workshop & Field Trip: Building Resilience\nJoin the Southwest Montana Sagebrush Partnership for the 2026 Fall Sustainable Ranching Workshop & Field Trip on October 14–15\, 2026\, focused on the theme “Building Resilience.” \nThe free two-day event will explore practical approaches to improving soil health\, riparian health\, and rangeland health\, productivity\, and resilience. Presentations on October 14 will be held at the University of Montana Western in Dillon\, followed by a field trip on October 15 to a large BLM allotment west of Twin Bridges. \nThe workshop will feature presentations on the connections between human health and soil health\, strategies for improving land health and productivity\, and new tools and technologies for implementing adaptive grazing systems. Ranchers participating in the Adaptive Grazing Project will also share their experiences putting adaptive grazing practices into action in Southwest Montana. \nOn the evening of October 14\, attendees can also join the Good Food Network for a screening of Groundswell at the historic Depot Theatre. \nRegistration is free\, but required so organizers can plan for seating and lunch. DESCRIPTION:Join CCALT\, Ranching for Profit and The Nature Conservancy for a Fundamentals One-Day Workshop on October 10th at 9:00 am in Hayden\, Colorado. This course will focus on the ag business fundamentals of finance\, accounting\, and leadership. Around 3:00pm\, the group will head out to The Nature Conservancy’s nearby Carpenter Ranch Preserve for an optional ranch tour and discussion. The cost of the course is being heavily subsidized by the generosity of our partners at The Nature Conservancy. Their support allows us to reduce the cost of registration to $50 per person plus $20 for each additional family member/successor. Regularly\, the price for this workshop is $200. The content is applicable for next generation producers as well and will provide a good foundation for succession planning. Lunch is included with the fee. SUMMARY:Stewarding the Plains: Soil Restoration on Generational Ranches
DESCRIPTION:Join us near Perryton\, TX for an in-field workshop exploring how bale grazing\, biochar\, compost additions\, and intensive grazing can exemplify the Long Arroyo Land and Cattle Company’s motto of “stewardship from the soil up.” Participants will tour active restoration sites and learn about in-field monitoring methods to assess changes. The hosts will also discuss practical management strategies\, including diversifying from cow-calf to adding a stocker herd\, adding no-till pasture wheat when rainfall allows\, and managing introduced monoculture grass differently than native range land. Dr. Eva Stricker will facilitate discussion around how to build and measure soil organic material in rangelands. The workshop will highlight how Laura Burandt\, the next generation of land steward at Long Arroyo\, is balancing tradition with innovation to sustain ranching livelihoods\, improve forage production\, and restore ecological function where the Llano Estacado rises up to meet the Southern Great Plains. \nThis workshop will be a time to network and learn from each other\, whether you’re an experienced rancher interested in learning about bale grazing in the area\, a student just starting out\, or a technical professional interested in exploring approaches for monitoring soil health. She manages the cattle company portion of the business and is active in grazing peer groups\, extension classes\, and have made many friends and acquaintances throughout the industry to keep in touch with. \nEva Stricker is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico Department of Biology and a part-time Evaluator for the Santa Fe-based regenerative agriculture non-profit the Quivira Coalition. Dr. Stricker received her PhD from UNM Biology. She has expertise in plant-soil interactions and biogeochemistry in drylands\, use of organic waste as a management tool for restoring degraded dry rangelands\, and inquiry-based\, equity-focused education for adult learners.

SUMMARY:Field Day: Water\, Conservation\, and Drought Resiliency at Mountain Island Ranch
DESCRIPTION:This Field Tour is now full. Please check our online calendar for future field tours. Thank you! \nMountain Island Ranch is nestled in the red rock canyons and soaring mesas of the Dolores Triangle. It is one of the most inspiring examples of conservation on private land in western Colorado. However\, despite decades of careful land management and large-scale restoration\, the ranch faces an existential water crisis due to the ongoing mega-drought and aridification in the Colorado River basin. \nJoin WLA at Mountain Island Ranch to discuss the work Mary Conover and Kenyon Fields have done to improve the hydrologic function of the land by slowing water through nature-based projects that utilize natural processes. We will discuss the benefits of these projects\, as well as their limitations\, especially when the precipitation does not appear. In the worst year of drought in living memory\, these projects are up against their limitations to be effective\, and landowners\, water managers\, and policy makers are struggling to find solutions to these intractable problems. We will focus on how landowners such as Conover and Fields deal with these problems\, what policy supports are needed for them to weather these historically difficult years\, and what landowners across the Colorado River Basin are going to have to do to prepare for unforeseeable consequences of drought.

He also worked as a grazing specialist with National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) for eight years. Dave and his wife Jenny direct-marketed lamb under the Montana Highland Lamb label for fifteen years into the Bozeman\, Helena and Missoula markets. Their efforts culminated in selling 300 lambs annually to Montana State University’s Miller Dining Hall\, restaurants\, grocery stores and private individuals. \nChuck Petersen \nChuck Petersen is a retired NRCS conservationist who resides with his wife Jennifer in Spring Creek\, NV. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Range Management from Humboldt State University (1991) and a masters degree in Range Science from Utah State University (2012). Chuck’s work with Fred Provenza (Utah State University) and Agee Smith (Cottonwood Ranch\, Elko County\, NV) involving cattle feeding behaviors represents his contribution to the ongoing discussion regarding livestock use of alternative forages that result in a variety of ecological and economic benefits. \nAgee Smith \nAgee is a partner in a family-owned ranch which sits in the O’Neil Basin on the east side of the Jarbidge mountains in northeast Nevada.  He is a 4th generation rancher and has been part of the management team since 1977.  The ranch is a cow/calf operation that holds permits on both BLM and USFS managed lands.  The ranch has a Hunting and Guest Ranch business also.  Agee has a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.  Additional education includes Ranching for Profit – Dave Pratt; Holistic Management – Tommy Martin and Steve Rich; Low Stress Stockmanship – Budd Williams; Lost River Grazing Academy – Jim Garrish; Integrity Soils – Nicole Masters.  Agee is also a Marine Corps Veteran. \nGlenn Elzinga \nGlenn Elzinga\, with his wife Caryl\, 7 daughters and several solid ranch hands ranch full time in Idaho’s Pahsimeroi Valley. There\, they raise black cattle on 49\,000 acres. They are first generation\, starting 32 years ago with no inherited equity on 60 irrigated acres and 7 cows. Now they run a 7-figure direct marketing beef\, lamb and pork business that sells all that their ranch produces. They have started transitioning their profitable ranch to the next generation\, capitalizing on the living soils and vibrant ecosystems that now exist as a result of their hands-on grazing management. \nMegan K. Nasto\, Ph.D. – Soil Biogeochemist & Agroecologist\, HNH Ecology \nFood has a way of bringing people together. It’s a shared human need\, it’s how we gather\, it carries culture and identity\, it’s a simple way to care for one another\, it provides us with a sense of place\, and it sparks conversation and camaraderie. And it – ultimately – all comes from the ground beneath our feet. The living\, teeming\, thriving world of soil. Soil – without which we would have nothing and be nothing. This is precisely why I work within the fields of soil biogeochemistry and agroecology. \nI believe a healthy and respectful understanding of the properties and processes of soil\, and how we alter them through various land management practices\, is of absolute necessity to care for the land that cares for us. I’ve been working towards building and communicating this understanding for over 15 years with a portfolio of producer-centered\, applied research within croplands\, pasturelands\, and rangelands at the landscape-scale. With a diverse background spanning in regenerative land management\, and sustainable farming systems\, he brings an integrative perspective to every operation\, large or small.  Driven by the belief that nutrient-dense food is the foundation of health—for both animals and humans. Donnie works to connect the dots across the entire agricultural ecosystem. From improving soil biology and crop resilience to enhancing forage quality and animal performance\, his approach is grounded by field experience and centered on long-term ecological and economic viability. \nWhether consulting with producers\, land stewards\, or food system stakeholders\, Donnie is dedicated to helping clients build healthier\, more productive systems that deliver real nutrition from the ground up. \nCharlie Gilman – Gilman IH Cattle \nGilman IH Cattle is a family-run ranch located in Alder\, Montana\, which has operated across multiple generations. Initially\, the ranch was a modern-traditional cow/calf operation. In 2007\, the ranch shifted its calving season from February to May. This change was made to reduce operational inputs and improve efficiency. The ranch purchases yearling cattle to fill mountain leases\, leaving the cow herd to rotationally graze on irrigated land in the valley. During the winter\, the cows graze on dormant grass. Gilman IH Cattle is committed to improving land health. The ranch employs effective management practices and utilizes livestock as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance its profitability and the quality of its pastures and rangeland. \nLarry Mehlhoff – 5L Ranch \nLarry Mehlhoff is an eighth-generation farmer and rancher whose roots run deep in American agriculture. Raised on his family’s farm in North Dakota\, Larry learned early that diversification and hard work are the backbone of a successful operation. From chickens to pigs to cattle\, along with crop farming and the daily responsibilities of ranch life\, he gained hands on experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to agriculture. \nIn 1979\, Larry’s family moved to Livingston\, Montana\, continuing their agricultural journey in the West. After several years in Livingston\, they spent time ranching in eastern Montana before Larry ultimately settled in Sheridan in 1991 with a vision and clear goals for the future. What began as a dream has grown into 5L Ranch\, a diversified operation in southwest Montana focused on raising cattle\, growing crops\, and stewarding the land for future generations. \nLarry believes ranching is not defined by set working hours. Sunup to sundown does not dictate the workday. Getting the job done and finishing the work is what matters. Through many trials and tribulations\, his philosophy has remained steady with one guiding principle\, no quit. \nThroughout his career\, Larry has served on numerous agricultural boards spanning both cattle and crop sectors\, sharing hard learned lessons and practical insight with producers across the country.
